Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

The concept of minimally invasive surgery can be attributed in large part to a 19th-century brilliant surgeon named William S. Halstead, who observed that minimizing surgical time, minimizing tissue disruption and properly closing all anatomic layers were crucial to successful patient outcomes. These are, among other things, foundational aspects of minimally invasive spine surgery and guide the underlying premises by which Dr. Perez-Cruet approaches his techniques.

These foundations are what guided the conception and development of the Thompson MIS system known as the BoneBac TLIF system and BoneBac Press, both the brainchild of Dr. Perez-Cruet. For those patients whose pathology indicates the need for an interbody (implant) between the lumbar vertebrae, the benefits are profound:

  • The incision is very small, reducing the potential for surgical site infection, improving healing time and getting the patient back on their feet more quickly.

  • We use the patient’s own bone as the primary catalyst for fusion. The elegance of this system is in the delivery of the bone into the disc space through the hollow (cannulated) implant inserter that allows the surgeon to completely pack the disc space with the patient’s own morselized bone. This bone is captured during the approach, then reintroduced into the disc space to optimize fusion.

  • The Thompson TLIF system also reduces muscle trauma using the one-step dilator upon approach by separating rather than cutting muscle.

What Is The BoneBac Press and What Does It Do?

The BoneBac Press is a device your doctor may use during your surgery to collect your own bone, known as autograft.

During the procedure, small bone fragments and shavings will be produced. This bone is often discarded because it is difficult to collect but through the use of the BoneBac Press, it is easily retrieved. The collected bone is then reused during your procedure to fill bone void. If your doctor is unfamiliar with this innovative item, we encourage you to direct him to this website so he or she may review the information contained and consider its use to optimize your fusion.

Introduction

If your doctor has determined that you require a fusion in your vertebrae, you may benefit from reusing your own bone (autograft) during your upcoming surgical procedure. Please use this patient education guide for additional information on how you may benefit from this approach to your procedure.

What Is Autograft Bone?

Autograft bone is a type of bone graft taken from your own body and inserted into a void elsewhere in your body. Autograft bone is commonly obtained from an area in the hip but in some cases, bone can be obtained directly from the incision already required for your surgical procedure. Bone obtained from the same incision as your surgical procedure is called local autograft bone.

What Are The Alternatives To Autograft?

Allograft bone, a type of bone graft taken from another person, or bone graft substitutes may be used as alternatives. Allograft is obtained by hospitals from tissue banks. Bone Graft substitutes are made of synthetic materials.

Why Are Bone Grafts Or Bone Graft Substitutes Needed For My Procedure?

Bone grafts or bone graft substitutes are used to fill a void or defect in the bone to help facilitate bone healing after surgery. Additionally, filling a void or defect may help provide structure and strength.

How May I Benefit From Using Autograft Bone?

Autograft bone is considered the “gold standard”. It poses no risk of disease transmission or rejection since it comes directly from you. Autograft bone also contains your own living bone and blood cells which speed the healing process.

What If My Doctor Does Not Use The Bonebac Press?

Ask them if they would be willing to source it by inquiry through this website. It is a simple, single-use device that we can ship anywhere in the USA.
